Biography

GILLIAND, Mary B. Hammons, age 68, a resident of Deatsville, AL; passed away Monday, March 8, 2010 after an extended battle with lung cancer. Mary was a devoted member of New Harmony Baptist Church, Marbury, AL. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Gilliand, father and mother, Harry and Clara B. Hammons, brother, James Hammons and her sister Nancy Hammons O’Conner. She is survived by one son, Darrell D. Gilliand, Eclectic, AL; one daughter, Mikena J. Gilliand, Birmingham, AL; three adopted grandsons, James A. Gilliand, Bevan R. Gilliand, Jessyn R. Gilliand, Deatsville, AL; special companion, Donald Wayne Edwards, Wetumpka, AL; two grandchildren, Derek (Becky) Gilliand and Jessie Gilliand, two great-grandchildren, brothers, Jessie Simmons, Oklahoma City, OK; Joe Hammons, Louisville, KY; Fred Hammons, Burlenson, TX; Raymond Hammons, Mt. Washington, KY; Ralph Hammons, Louisville, TX; sister, Francis Harris, Louisville, TX. Extended family, Ken Edwards, Lynn (Bob) Lawson, Angie (Paul) Midkiff, Don (Beth) Edwards, and Michelle (David) Vinson, and seven extended family grandchildren. Special friends, Carolyn Price, Robbie Favre, Pat Dail, William and Ann Quillin, many many close friends and other relatives. Mary loved everyone she met and had a very loving heart. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She will be laid to rest at New Harmony Baptist Church, Marbury, AL; on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Joe Perkins and Brother Gerald Wood officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service (1:00 p.m.) at the church. Pallbearers will be Ken Edwards, Don Edwards, James (Jr.) Hammons, Cecil Gilliand, Wayne Gilliand, and Phelon Bryant. Alternative pallbearers will be Tip Quillin and Jerry Parks. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Research Society in her honor, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, Alabama 36111.
